About

A consulting practice with a sense of direction.

Makai was founded on a simple belief: the best technology partners are the ones who tell you the truth, do the work themselves, and leave when you don't need them anymore.

The name

Two meanings, one direction.

Makai is a Hawaiian word meaning seaward — toward the ocean. Paired with its counterpart mauka (toward the mountains), it gives Hawaiians a way to navigate that doesn't depend on cardinal directions or street grids. It's a word about orientation relative to the land you're standing on.

That metaphor maps cleanly onto the work. There's no universal "north" in technology transformation — your direction depends on where you are, what you have, and what currents you're working with. Our job is to help you find your bearing and move with intent.

The name is also personal. Makai is the combination of my two daughters' names — Mady and Kaia. Every choice I make in building this company carries their names with it, which is the strongest accountability I know.

The approach

What we believe.

01

Senior practitioners, no pyramid.

The traditional consulting model sells partner-level credibility and delivers junior execution. We don't. The people you meet in the first conversation are the people doing the work.

02

Outcomes over artifacts.

A 200-page strategy document that nobody reads is a failure, regardless of how thoughtful it is. We measure ourselves on what changes for your business — not on deliverable counts.

03

Honest counsel, even when it costs us.

If you don't need us, we'll say so. If a smaller engagement is the right fit, we'll scope it that way. The fastest way to lose a client's trust is to sell them something they didn't need.

04

Built to be left behind.

Our goal in every engagement is for your team to own what we built together — fully, confidently, and without us. Documentation, enablement, and pairing are part of the job, not an afterthought.
